Throughout history, humanity has looked to the skies, wondering if we are alone. But those seeking answers are not just modern scientists. Thousands of years ago, the Sumerians of Mesopotamia had similar questions. According to them, humanity was created by powerful beings from the sky—these beings were the Anunnaki.


Who Were the Anunnaki?


In Sumerian mythology, the Anunnaki were divine beings who determined the fate of gods and humans alike. Believed to be descendants of Anu, the sky god, they supposedly came to Earth to guide humanity, teaching them agriculture and civilization. Ancient Sumerian tablets describe the Anunnaki as beings of great knowledge, involved in gold mining, and, according to some interpretations, as those who "descended from the sky."

Since the mid-20th century, some researchers have refused to see the Anunnaki as mere mythological gods. One of the most controversial figures, Zecharia Sitchin, proposed that the Anunnaki were actually advanced beings from another planet. According to Sitchin, they came from a mysterious planet called Nibiru, genetically modified early humans, and used them as a labor force.


This theory sparked excitement among alternative historians but faced heavy criticism from mainstream scholars. Still, intriguing questions remain: How did the Sumerians possess advanced astronomical knowledge? Why do ancient civilizations share similar depictions of divine beings? Could the sudden technological advancements in early societies be linked to something beyond Earth?


Is There Any Truth to the Anunnaki Legend?


Were the Anunnaki real extraterrestrial visitors, or are they simply the creations of ancient mythology? There is no definitive answer. However, the legacy of the Sumerians—inscriptions, their fascination with the cosmos, and their mysterious tales—leaves room for speculation. Perhaps the history of humanity is far more complex and extraordinary than we assume.
